Task three: A critical reflection on the process of skills development
Gibbs (1994) has seen evaluation of skills developed as a critical process of our thinking about an incident, evaluation of the outcome of the incident, analysis of the incident, deciding the best alternatives in relation to the incident and action plan for the incident if it happens again. Doherty et al (2000) argue that learning can not take place without reflection. My skill development process has been influenced by both Gibbs (1994) and Doherty et al (2000). I really found it interesting to sharing with colleagues as it helped me to find out areas of improvement. When I faced any critical moment at job frequently (for example dealing with a tough customer) I used to analyse the situation after it has been occurred, also I used to share it with my colleagues and learn form them what they do on the similar situations. Then I used to decide one alternative and use it next time to check whether the outcome is better or not. As mentioned by Morse (2005), “ If you can explain your own ideas and learnt from those of others, you will be able to get the most of your time in higher education and your working and social life.” I always like to learn from all the possible sources. From my skill development process I realize that that continuous learning process helps an individual to overcome his skill lackings and improve himself.
Dewey (1938) suggests that previous experiences should be linked with new learning for better outcome. I tried to use my previous experiences when I face any critical moment at job and I found it really helpful.
Benne & Sheats (1940) classified several categories of roles that can be performed by individual during the lifetime of a project. I have found some of the roles provided by Benne & Sheats (1940) have matched with the role that I have performed in Rangs Properties Limited. For example, I act as an information seeker as I always ask suggestion to my colleague or supervisor before performing new task such as preparing a price report for customer. I also act as an information giver as sometimes I have helped my colleagues by informing ways to improve several skills such as typing speed. Beside, I also act as both opinion seeker and opinion giver in different stages. For example, I suggested my managers to give advertisement on the newspaper published by Bangladeshi community newspapers at foreign countries. I also helped the organization by managing contact details of several Community newspaper publishers through my personal networks. All of my colleagues and my manager considered me as a harmonizer as I always tried to help them to reduce stress by using humor. Moreover, I was always a good follower as I always had respect on the suggestions of my superior and colleague.
During the skills development process, I have experienced both positive and negative motivational triggers. I personally liked positive motivational triggers such as positive feedback from supervisors, colleagues and friends. However, I also accepted negative motivational triggers in a positive way and tried to inspire myself to develop me according to their need.
In general, from the skill development process I realize that commitment and enthusiasm towards any task or project can enable an individual to maximize his skill level. I always tried to stay outside comport zone. White (2009) described comport zone as a limited boundary from where a person don’t want to step out. I felt good while trying to reach the ‘optimal performance zone’ classified by White (2009). I experienced that positive approach towards task and positive viewpoints towards objects can help a person to learn more.
While doing the Personal Development Plan the major problem I have faced is getting the right balance work holism and inertia among work and rest. Though I have developed several skills, I believe that I need to improve some skills mainly decision making and problem solving skill, target setting skills, interpersonal skills and improvement in stress management.
In order to improve decision and making and problem solving skills, I would go through several case studies. While going through the case studies, at first I would go through the problem and then I would think about a solution. After that, I would check the given solution and would check with mine. I think it would help me a lot to improve my decision making and problem solving skill. For the improvement of target setting skills, I would go through several books and online sources to learn some techniques while setting target. Apart from that I would also talk to some of my friends who are doing target oriented job. Finally I need improvement in interpersonal skill, especially during stressful moment. I believe that physical and mental health plays a vital role behind being productive in a stressful moment. I realize that internal negative thought processes of mine is mainly responsible for my stress. That’s why I am planning to go through different meditation techniques.
